புராண பின்புலம்
1. According to Puranas, King Uparisivasu, a friend of Indra, had the power to fly in the sky. While flying through this temple, he tried to eat the sages who had done penance here, mistaking them for rice. The prayer says that he gave his daughter in marriage to the Lord.
2. The priest of this temple one day gave a garland to the king who came to the temple and there was a long hair in it. The king, who was enraged by this, told the priest that it was Perumal’s thirumudi, and when the king came to see him tomorrow, he said that the priest would be punished if Perumal’s hair was not there. The priest prayed to Perumal to save him. Taking pity on him, Perumal came to Tiruvulam to save him. The next day, when the king came and saw him, Perumal really had a tirumudi on his head. It is believed that because of this event, Utsawar is known as Chaurirajaperumal.
3. Thirumudi darshan can be seen only on the new moon day in Utsawar. When a devotee known as Thanyatharaiyar who lived in Thirukannapuram was performing Tirupani for Perumal, there was a famine. He also did not eat anything without offering it to Perumal. So everyone knew that Perumal accepted the simple Pongal made by his servant at his house when his wife made Pongal at home and worshiped the Lord mentally. Pongal is offered to Perumal in Artha Samam even today to commemorate this.
4. As desired by Vibhishnawar, Sri Rama stayed at Srirangam. As Vibhishnawar admired the beauty of the Lord reclining in the Sayana posture at Srirangam, he prayed to the Lord to bless him with his graceful gait. The Lord promised to do so in his eastern abode in the lower house – Thirukannapuram.According to him every month Ammavasai midday Thirukaitala Seva in this shrine. Vibhishna with a chavrimudi on his head walks gracefully towards the shrine.
5. Garuda with passion destroyed – with Garuda who was returning after getting amrita in the ocean of milk to free his mother. On the way he was full of passion, thinking that he was bringing nectar that no one else could get. In his rage he went above the void and lost his power and fell into the sea. He did penance on a mountain in the sea with a calf that ate him. Vishnu accepted him as his vehicle. Masi presents Garuda on the beach on Pournami. During this festival, Swami is welcomed differently by chanting as bridegroom.
