5 Must-See Attractions at Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary
The Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary, located at the southeastern tip of the Nagapattinam district in Kodikkarai, is a haven for biodiversity. Spanning 21.47 sq. km, this Ramsar site is where the Bay of Bengal meets the Palk Strait, creating a unique ecosystem of mangroves, tropical dry evergreen forests, and salt marshes.
1. The Majestic Blackbucks and Wildlife
Created in 1967 specifically for the conservation of the Blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra), the sanctuary is one of the few places in India where you can see these elegant antelopes grazing in their natural habitat. You can also spot spotted deer, wild boars, semi-wild ponies, and even dolphins near the shore.
2. A Paradise for Birdwatchers
Between November and January, the sanctuary transforms into an avian paradise. It hosts the second-largest congregation of migratory waterbirds in India.
-
Greater Flamingos: Over 20,000 flamingos visit annually.
-
Rare Species: Look out for the Spoonbill Sandpiper, Spot-billed Pelican, and Painted Storks.
3. Historical Landmarks: Chola and British Lighthouses
History meets nature here. You can visit the ruins of a 1,000-year-old Chola Lighthouse, which was used for maritime trade centuries ago. Nearby stands the modern 13-meter lighthouse built by the British in 1890, offering a glimpse into the region’s colonial past.
4. Ramar Padam (Rama’s Footprint)
Located at the highest point of the sanctuary, Ramar Padam is a small shrine containing stone footprints believed to belong to Lord Rama. From the nearby watchtower, you can get a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire sanctuary and the surrounding sea.
